Installation of an 840KVAR 12-step automatic capacitor bank system, optimizing the power factor (Cos φ) and saving electricity costs for the LongTech factory.

Project Introduction

To minimize reactive power penalties and improve internal grid efficiency, an 840KVAR capacitor bank project was implemented at LongTech's 2000KVA substation. Manh Cuong was responsible from capacity calculations to final installation.

System Role and Function

The automatic capacitor bank system brings several economic and technical benefits:

  • Automatically switching capacitor steps to maintain a stable Cos φ above 0.9.
  • Reducing voltage drop in the internal grid, helping motors start and operate more smoothly.
  • Reducing power losses on supply cables.

Detailed Construction Items

Actual implementation works:

  • Manufacturing standard capacitor bank enclosures with optimized heat dissipation.
  • Reducing voltage drop in the internal grid, helping motors start and operate more smoothly.
  • Installing smart automatic power factor controllers and specialized switching devices (Capacitor contactors).
  • Connecting power to the MSB main low-voltage system.

Advanced Technical Solutions

Due to the factory's high concentration of electronic equipment, Manh Cuong advised installing harmonic filters to protect capacitors from resonance, doubling the system's lifespan compared to standard compensation methods.

Standardized Execution Process

Capacitor bank implementation process:

  • Step 1: Measuring actual grid parameters using power quality analyzers.
  • Step 2: Designing and assembling the panel at Manh Cuong's workshop.
  • Step 3: Transporting, positioning, and connecting power cables.
  • Step 4: Setting up the controller and performing step-by-step trial runs.
  • Step 5: Monitoring the first month's electricity bill to evaluate economic efficiency.

  • Cos φ consistently maintained at 0.95 - 0.98, completely eliminating reactive power penalties.
  • Stable operating temperature thanks to the automatic ventilation system.
